11/15/07 The original tally showed that the operating budget passed - but this is from today's Times Herald-Record:

Even the Monroe Library budget vote went down to the wire, ultimately failing by 43 votes.

An election-night count gave budget approval a 17-vote lead, while a proposition for a $12 million library building expansion was voted down. The tide turned when a recanvass of machine votes turned up 33 votes against the proposed $84,896 increase to the $1 million budget.

Library Director Marilyn McIntosh said the budget might have been hurt by the building proposal, which many voters considered too expensive. "I don't see it as much a rejection of the operating budget as a rejection of the building," she said.

The overcrowded library risks losing its state charter if it doesn't find a remedy soon for its space issues.

....In other business, the board voted against a controversial proposal to televise Planning Board meetings. Board members said the filming of the meetings would undermine the technical nature of the discussion and potentially confuse the public.

Councilman Harley Doles, the one contrary vote in support of videotaping the meetings, noted: “As government continues to offer more information seamlessly, the quality of dialogue and understanding between the public and government is certain to grow.”
